Read the dish before the ticket.
The official Buenos Aires tourism site has a page on what, where and when to eat. This notebook keeps the foods that page describes and that a Buenos Aires ticket on vstmd also lists, so the food you read about is the food a ticket actually names.
Mate: a ritual more than a drink.
The tourism site describes mate as a bitter herbal drink sipped through a metal straw from a hollow gourd, shared among friends, family or colleagues, with one person refilling and passing it round. Two tickets are built around it: La Recoleta Argentinian Mate Workshop and Retiro Neighborhood Mate Workshop. Both list a tasting of yerba varieties, grinds and blends, with desserts or pastries alongside.
Empanadas: the quick savoury snack.
According to the site, empanadas are crescent-shaped pastries, usually baked and sometimes fried, filled with ham and cheese, meat, chicken or vegetables. San Telmo Market Food Tour lists an empanada among its tastings; the ticket does not say which filling.
Dulce de leche and the alfajor.
The site calls dulce de leche a national favourite and names the alfajor, a dulce de leche cookie, as one way to eat it. The same San Telmo Market Food Tour lists a dulce de leche alfajor along with choripan and a glass of wine.
Named by the source, not listed on a ticket we track.
The page also describes pizza and fresh pasta, locro and other stews, churros, ice cream and the city’s steakhouses. No Buenos Aires ticket on vstmd lists them by name. Argentine Asado Experience + Workshop is an asado experience, but it lists only “food and drink”, and Buenos Aires Food Tour lists “10 tastings” without naming them, so we promise none of these dishes on any ticket.
Dietary needs.
Empanadas, pastries and dulce de leche contain dairy, flour and often meat or egg, and many tickets list only “tastings”. A food list is no guide to allergies. Confirm substitutions with the provider before you book.
Try the ritual, not only the name.
The La Recoleta Mate Workshop is the best-reviewed mate ticket on vstmd, with 35 English reviews.
